Hot & Humid in Houston, Texas
Ran my long run  on Sunday at 6:30 AM with Bayou City Road Runners (BCRR) where the weather was 84'F at 6:30 with high humidity.  Long run was 12 miles & within 3 miles we were all soaking wet.  Going to be a long hot summer for marathon training....

Hurricane Season Starts Today

June 1st is the first day of hurricane season.  If you live along the coast, make sure you have your hurricane kit.  The time to plan is now, so make up your list & buy the items needed.  Some things to keep in mind:

  • Water (5 gallon bottles)
  • Food stuff for 7 days
    • Jumbo jar of peanut butter
    • (3) frozen loaves of bread
    • Tuna fish 10 cans or so
    • Energy bars, granola bars
  • Survival plastic box / kit with sealable lid that contains:
    • Manual can opener (those electrical ones won't work when electricity is out)
    • Batteries (lots of them)
    • Flashlight
    • Hand crank radio
    • Emergency cash
    • Copy of insurance papers (wrapped in plastic baggies)
    • Candles (with matches & lighter, wrapped in plastic)\
    • Wipes
    • Sanitizers
    • Energy bars (something that will last a long time)
  • (2) Ice blocks in freezer (1 gallon water frozen)
    • Will keep a cooler cool for 5 days or so
    • Can also be used as drinking water
  • Bleach
  • Good boots
  • Empty water bottles (various different sizes work for freezing)
  • Big cooler(s)
    • small cooler too.
  • Medications (get an extra 15 day supply)
  • Parents of babies:  lots of diapers, dry food, wipes & anything else you need

Other items I find useful

  • Liquor (lots of it)  Stuff you don't need cold
    •  (8) bottles of wine
      • One for each night & some to share with neighbors.  We would visit neighbors each night & sit on front porches & drink wine
      • One bottle to get through the first night as the storm is hitting.  Hell what else is there to do?
  • Generator (never run it indoors, duh!)
    • Long, very long extension cords
    • Ditto for businesses that plan on opening post hurricane.
  • Gas (store safely).  Find a gas station that doesn't have a 6 hour wait.  Fill up before dire warnings hit; nobody likes to sit in line for hours to get gas.  Fill up your gas tank 3 days before expected landfall.
  • Solar panels
  • Solar lights (bring garden solar lights inside at night)
  • Solar mobile phone charger would be a great idea

Before the storm hits (Weeks/ months before)

  • Have shatter resistant window film installed
    • Supplied by your window film wholesale distributor
    • My preference is 7 Mil Clear
  • Decide if you plan on staying or leaving based on storm category.  Make the plans now & know your route & alternate route.  Let (inland) family & friends know they are the ones you plan on staying with well in advance.  Bring liquor with you & food stuff along with blankets & rain jackets
    • Do you live in a flood zone?  Evacuation zone?  Figure that out now; not when the hurricane is on its way!
    • Need extra help?  Register with the local Red Cross in advance (yearly)
  • Keep freezer clean
  • Freeze some extra bottles of water (freezer will run more efficient when full)
    • More ice you have, the longer you can keep food stuff
  • Keep limbs cut back
  • Check out all the storm drains around your house / office
    • Keep grass, vines, etc clear of drains all summer long

24 hrs - 48 hrs before expected land fall

  • Fill up gas tank in car
  • Buy any missing food stuff (canned/jars) & wine (fill in liquor of choice)
    • Gatoraid works too
    • Granola bars, energy protein bars, etc.
    • Comfort food (it's ok to buy that junk food, it's a hurricane for goodness sake)
  • Get an extra 15 day supply of any medications (due this early before lines form)
  • Parents of babies( stock up on diapers, powder food, jars of baby food, wipes, etc)
  • Get cash from ATM now.
  • Check out all the storm drains around your house / office
    • Clear out any long grass, vines, etc.
    • Post storm: if water is rising, pick out the debris & clear the drains (if safe)
      • Repeat as needed for the next 48 hours if it continues to rain
      • Get your neighbors to "pitch in".  Sucks when you are the only one clearing out 7 storm drains & swimming down Main street going from drain to drain. Yep, been there done that.
  • Pickup anything that 75-150 winds can use as a missile to go through your window
    • Toss lawn furniture in your pool (if you have one)
    • Probably turn off filter system to avoid getting a clog & blowing the engine should you be lucky enough to still have electricity
  • Clean out the freezer (before trash pickup)
  • Freeze as many bottles of water as you can
    • More ice you have, the longer you can keep food stuff
    • I transfer ice blocks to frig to help & stay cool, then make more in the freezer
    • Ice blocks can be used to keep freezer & frig cold/cool for 24 hrs or so after you lose electricity.
      • Once you lose electricity, do not open freezer or frig door to keep it cool as long as possible
      • Fill up ice coolers w/ food stuck & ice blocks & bags of ice
        • Ice blocks combined w/ bags of ice works great
  • Fill up on water
    • Fill up any jugs with water for drinking
    • Fill up bathtub (might need it to flush the toilet, don't want to waste drinking water on that)
  • Charge up that cell phone now, before you lose electricity
  • Let loved ones know your hurricane plans

Post storm

  • Keep storm drains clear of debris (if safe)
  • Be careful of any downed electrical cables
  • Start cleaning up
  • Keep hydrated
  • Check on neighbors
  • Let loved ones know where & how you are (don't talk long, your mobile battery will die soon)
  • Put generator outside in well ventilated area (never use one in doors)
  • Have care packages sent from inland via UPS.  UPS is amazing, they start delivering very quickly (Ike hit Sat. morning, UPS arrived Monday!)
  • Keep a good attitude, we're all in this together

These are tips from a hurricane veteran of Hurricane Andrew (Miami) & Hurricane Ike (Houston), also check with Red Cross & local authorities for other tips.  Always stay safe, be prepared & be aware.  Hurricane season will end this November, only six months to go.
