HOW SOLAR WINDOW TINT IS MADE?

How Reflective Window Film Is Made?

HOW SOLAR WINDOW TINT IS MADE?Solar Window film starts as Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) pellets that are melted. PET is used because of its excellent optical clarity and strength. The melted material is then biaxially streched into a polyester sheet, meaning it is stretched in the direction of both its length and width. UV blockers are usually added during this process.

The next phase of construction is to add dyes or metals to the polyester sheeting. The materials chosen will be determined by the desired performance of the film and its application. Dyed films absorb a lot of heat, and therefore are generally used for automotive applications. Metallized films work in the opposite, rejecting most of the heat rather than absorbing it and are most common for residential/commercial films.

Dyeing –  The polyester film is coated and then cured in heated ovens. The pigments are impregnated into the polyester by the heat. The color becomes a permanent part of the film and will not wash off.

How Reflective Window Film Is Made?Metallizing – can be achieved through three processes:

Evaporative Coating – A crucible containing metal is heated until the metal melts and forms a gas cloud. This metal gas is deposited on the film and bonds as soon as it cools. Aluminum is the metal of choice because of its low melting point.

Electron Beam Coating – This method is similar to the evaporative method except that a beam of high-energy electrons is aimed at the source of metal to heat it. This energy causes the metal to vaporize and form a cloud of gas that deposits on the polyester sheet.

Sputtering – An electrically charged gas, such as argon, bombards the metal and frees the molecules. These molecules are deposited onto the film and layered side by side, providing extremely thin and precise coatings. This coating is so tight that the water used during installation cannot evaporate, which causes a hazy look. This hazy look will go away after two to three weeks of curing.

Next, a scratch-resistant coating is applied to the side that will face the interior of the home. This coating acts as a protective barrier against dust and debris or for anything that may come into contact with the film. A great scratch-resistant coating is a key element for longevity.

SputteringAfter the scratch-resistant coating phase, the mounting adhesive is applied to the side of the film that will be applied to the window. An aggressive adhesive is also needed to provide longevity and ensure the film does not bubble or peel. Adhesives come in a pressure sensitive (sticky) type for automotive, and a clear dry adhesive that utilizes a gel covering activated by water for residential/commercial films.

Finally, the film is covered with a liner over the adhesive that is peeled away during the installation process. The liner acts as a guard against contamination from dust and debris. Multiple plies may be joined together to provide extra performance and durability.

        THE HISTORY OF WINDOW TINT

The first instance of window tinting as we know it stems from America around the time of World War II and the years following.  One of the more popular tinting manufacturers were EZ Eye factory tint.  You could find this tint sometimes on the ’40 Mercury Romango from Detroit, or later, the ’58 Chevy Impala.

If you couldn’t get the windows tinted from the factory, some people took a swing at tinting at home for the first time.  However, this is before window film was invented, so they used spray-on tinting.  The result was a dark and usually uneven tint, so when window film was invented in 1966, it changed the window-tinting game.

The film started off as “dye-based,” which had poor heat rejection, and would absorb heat into the vehicle, rather than reflect it back.  It also had a tendency of turning purple and bubbly in the sun, and didn’t have a very long lifespan.

A second generation of window film emerged in the early nineties. This film was constructed of metal integrated with dye. This “hybrid” film contained dye to absorb heat and metallic particles to reflect the sun’s rays, and therefore heat. It approached 50% heat reduction. The major drawback with metallized films is interference with electronic devices like GPS and sometimes radio.

The newest edition to the window tinting industry is ceramic films.  These are the top of the line. They last a lifetime or longer, reject heat and UV rays, and do not interfere with electronics.  We have come a long way in the window tinting world, and are only coming up with new and exciting ways to improve upon our product!

ANSWERS TO COMMON MYTHS ABOUT CAR WINDOW TINT FILM

Window tinting can help to reduce radiant heat in car, lower heat and solar damage, make your vehicle more comfortable, and extend the life of your interior. With all of the good that window film can do for your automobile, it may not come as a surprise that there are some myths and rumors about it, too.

Solar Control Film, Inc. is a leading window tint distributor in the U.S., so we’re pretty confident that we can answer and debunk some common myths about window film…

Myth: Eventually – such as after a few years – window film will begin to bubble and discolor (like that purple bubbly stuff on some cars).

Fact: Not true! The film that you see bubbling and eggplant-toned on car windows is, first of all, not quality film. Secondly, it was most certainly not installed by a professional. Window tinting is done with metallized films that do not turn color and stay the same near-clear tone that they are on installation day. Our window films are guaranteed not to discolor. Our professional network of installers are all skilled to an expert level on the installation process to ensure there is no bubbling.

Myth: Window film will make my windows dark.

Fact: While window films come in a variety of tints (the darker they are, the more solar heat they reflect away), most of them are very light and nearly invisible. You can select the best window tinting to fit your needs in protection and tone – your windows won’t be darker unless you want them to be!

Myth: All UV rays and fading is stopped by window tinting.

Fact: Nearly all window films will protect against at least 99.9% of harmful UV rays. However, fading is caused by more than just UV rays. Window tinting will protect your interior from that 99.9% of UV light, which makes up about 40 percent of the causes of fading. The film will also reflect most of the solar heat and visible light (another 50 percent of the causes of fading), but the remaining causes of fading –including chemical vapors, indoor light, cleaning materials, and humidity – cannot be controlled with window tinting.

Myth: Over time, the UV-protection of my window film will lose its effectiveness.

Fact: The films we manufacture for your windows have a proprietary adhesive system that does not lose its effectiveness as time passes. Solar Control Window Films standards have been effective for upwards of 15-20 years, and all of our film installations come with at least a 15-year warranty for interior commercial applications, or lifetime warranty for automobile windows.

Myth: If I have window film on my doors and windows, burglars will be completely unable to break the glass and enter my car.

Fact: While window tinting, safety films and security films do deter glass from breaking in a burglary attempt, they cannot completely stop a burglar from breaking the glass and entering your vehicle. It will require considerably more effort and materials for them to gain entrance, but it is still possible.

CARE AND CLEANING OF NEW CAR WINDOW FILM

Now that you have your car windows tinted, you will need to know how to care for them. Here are a few tips to follow after having your windows tinted.

Rolling windows down: We recommend that you leave your windows up for 48 hours (2 days) after they are tinted. This will allow the film time to adhere to the glass so it will not peel when it is finally rolled down.

Drying time: For the first few days after your windows are tinted they will be cloudy, hazy, and you may see little water pockets forming in the tint. This is normal! When windows are tinted, the squeegee can only remove a certain amount of the water from between the film, and the glass. As the film dries, the remaining water will form little pockets. These will simply evaporate and go away by themselves. The amount of time before your new tint will be totally dry is determined by the amount of sunlight it gets. If it’s cloudy and overcast outside, it will take longer, if it’s hot and sunny, then the film dries very quickly.

Cleaning: After your windows are tinted, you need to wait a couple of days to clean them. Basically, you do not want to risk pulling the tint loose, before it has a chance to dry. Once your vehicle has been tinted the windows will have been lightly wiped down, but will probably need a proper cleaning. A soft paper towel and any non-ammonia cleaner (do not use the blue “Windex with ammonia D”, or any blue colored cleaners because they usually have ammonia in them).  You can use: Vinegar Windex (Green), or any of the citrus Windex’s,. There are other cleaners made specifically for tinted windows such as Eagle One’s 20/20. which are very good. In addition you can use soap and water, vinegar and water, or really anything without ammonia or abrasives.

CAR WRAPS | ANALYSIS OF THE INVESTMENT OF PPF CAR WRAP ADVERTISING

Car Wraps | Analysis of the Investment of PPF Car Wrap Advertising

Car wraps are one of our hottest selling products. The popularity of vinyl ppf car wraps to advertise business is quickly becoming a profitable marketing campaign for many business targeting local traffic. Recently Quickbooks spoke about the effectiveness of car wraps to advertise your business. Here is their article:

If you’ve seen vehicle wraps in you area advertising other local businesses, you may have wondered if it makes sense for your company.  In fact, the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) says that more than 95 percent of Americans are reached by media targeting vehicle drivers and passengers. Here’s what you need to know before investing in this unique form of advertising.

              What Is a Vehicle Wrap?

A vehicle wrap is a digitally printed mobile billboard that is professionally installed on your vehicle. Wraps can encompass the entire vehicle or a portion of it, including the windows, and are printed in full color with eye-catching graphics. They are made from heavy-duty vinyl and typically last three to five years.

Aren’t Wraps For Large Companies That Have Vehicle Fleets?

Vehicle advertising is good for any size business, and that some small-business owners feel it legitimizes their company by getting their brand and logo out where potential customers can see them. When a smaller business uses vehicle wraps, it puts them on the same playing field as franchises and companies that are large enough to maintain vehicle fleets.

              How Much Do Wraps Costs?

Any size vehicle can be wrapped, though the amount of coverage and the type of vehicle determine pricing. The average investment typically falls between $1,500 and $3,000. That includes the wrap material and professional installation.

How Do Vehicle Wraps Compare to Other Forms of Advertising?

The OAAA says that mobile advertising can be the most effective and efficient form of out of home advertising, reaching more consumers at a lower cost per thousand impressions than any other form of advertising. It is estimated that a wrap costs around 4 cents per thousand impressions, while other forms of advertising cost significantly more. For instance, it’s estimated that outdoor signs cost $3.56 per thousand impressions and newspaper ads cost $19.70 for that number of impressions. One wrapped vehicle will net between 30,000 and 80,000 impressions per day, depending on how far and where the car is driven. All in all, the cost can be less than $44 per million impressions.

What is the Average Return on Investment for Vehicle Wraps?

“We hear stories from customers on a daily basis about how their business increased after wrapping their vehicles.” “Some tell us that they gained new customers before they even got home with their newly wrapped car, while others literally took an order as soon as they left our offices. One of our customers tracks his job leads and says his sales shot up from $42,000 to $219,000 in 10 months due to his wrapped trucks.”

There is no average return on investment (ROI) for vehicle wraps because it will depend on the type of company you have, where and when the vehicle is driven, and the effectiveness of the wrap design. But there are ways you can measure your return.

First, you can provide a separate phone number, such as an 800 number, that is only advertised on the wraps. Then keep track of the calls that come in through it.

Next, advertise a special discount or deal only on the wrapped vehicle, and keep track of those calls, too.
Finally, you can create a special landing page for your website and put that URL on the wrap. (Be sure to keep it simple so potential customers can remember it.)

Although there is no across-the-board ROI figure for wraps, you can use this free vehicle wrap ROI calculator to compare it with the return you get with other forms of advertising.

              A Word of Caution

Printing technology is better than ever, wrap installations are easier and less likely to fail. But as a result of these advancements, some inexperienced people have set up shop, so it’s a good idea to check a wrap provider’s credentials and workmanship. For instance, wraps should not damage a vehicle’s paint job, though if done incorrectly, they can result in the images bleeding through the wrap onto the paint, or the paint being scratched or chipped. That’s why, you should invest in your design and utilize an experienced company to produce and install the wrap. Finally, you should always ask for a warranty in writing.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR STATE’S VEHICLE WINDOW TINT LAWS

State by State Car Tint Regulations

Everyone knows the benefits of getting the windows on their vehicles tinted; increased privacy, reducing the heat inside the vehicle to prolong the life of leather interior, blocking out harmful UV rays that have been shown to cause skin cancer, or your motivation may be purely aesthetic perhaps because you feel it improves the appearance of the car. However some car owners fail to consider the tint laws of the resident state that may restrict the types of window tint, or the regulations on how dark the front, back, and side windows can respectively be.

Each window may have a different VLT law (Visible Light Transmittance) & reflectivity law. For instance, some states have had laws on the books regarding window tint for vehicles since as early as 1983 (Iowa), while others were late adopters and have passed window tint legislation as recently as 2007 (Maine). Most tint shops will know their local tint laws. Always double check your state tint law before choosing which film is right for you.

Thankfully, the wonderful team researchers over at the International Window Film Association (IWFA) have put together a rather comprehensive chart of the laws and regulations regarding automotive window tint state by state. The charts for both United States and Canada window tint laws is the result of independent research, using several sources of public state documents. Now please bear in mind that this chart is in NO WAY a legal document, nor is it the be all end all compilation of definitive window tint laws. Again, you should ALWAYS check the laws in your state from a reliable source like a government organization before proceeding with having your vehicle tinted. Ignorance of the law has never been a viable defense for not following it. Almost all states publish their laws online.

So make sure you are well informed by viewing the United States chart here and the chart for Canada here.

                  DON’T PANIC……GET CERAMIC!

                  Ceramic: A Premium Window Tint

Vehicular window tints are very common nowadays. They have several advantages that end up saving car owners and operators a lot of money on the long run. It’s important to understand how and why tints are beneficial for your vehicle before you decide on what type of tint to select. All modern window tints help reflect ultraviolet radiation also know as UV, which helps your health and also helps extend your car’s interior lifespan. Automotive window tints also help you control the temperature in your vehicle, meaning it uses less energy to cool or your car.

Ceramic film is the “newest” type of film in the market. Simply put its good for all purposes and has already proven its worth in terms of performance and reliability. The use of this type of films has increased due to its attractive properties, particularly in the area of its high heat rejection. Ceramic window-tinting film cuts from 45% to 50% of the solar heat that enters through the windows in the form of infrared light, while allowing maximum visibility both by day and night. Like carbon film, ceramic window-tinting film allows maximum efficiency in the functioning of radios, cell phones, GPS systems, and all other such devices being operated from inside the protected space. It surpasses the other types in its resistance to glare and fading, and renders windows with some shatter-proof properties to help keep glass shards together. Ceramic film is also most effective in its blocking of ultraviolet light from the interior; in the case of ultraviolet light (the kind of light rays that contribute to sunburn and skin cancer), ceramic window-tinting film can block up to 99% from entering the interior.

The principal advantages of ceramic window films are:

                  • Increased rejection of infrared light as compared regular films.
                    • Not changing the original view as it can be transparent. It has no need of a dark appearance to be effective.
                    • It reduces discoloration and deterioration of the interiors. In the case of homes it protects furniture, flooring and curtains while in the case of vehicle it protects the car seats and dashboard.
                    • It protects the skin given the high UV rejection.
                    • It can be installed in all types of windows. In the case of cars it even includes the windshield due to its high transparency
