Texas Tint Law Sec. 547.609 (SB 589) Takes Effect Sept 1, 2009
Texas is updating the tint law in the State that officially takes effect September 1, 2009. The bill is written in
legal language so it's a bit confusing. We have called the author of the bill, Senator John Carona, to ask for clarification on a few items: - Exactly what does the "Label" (sticker) need to state?
- Please
supply a sample label
- Does the label need to go on every window with window film or just one?
- What happens
to vehicles that had window film installed prior to Sept. 2009? How does the tinter prove that it was installed before
the new law took effect?
For more clarification, the writers of the law can be contacted at the following:
The Honorable John Carona P.O. Box 12068 Capitol Station Austin, Texas 78711 (512) 463-0116 Fax: (512) 463-3135
8080
N. Central Expy. Suite 1440, LB 44 Dallas, TX 75206 (214) 378-5751 FAX: (214) 378-5739
Some
possible examples of labels might be:
VLT 25% Meets or Exceeds State Laws of TX Sec. 547.613
or
>25% VLT <25% LR Meets or Exceeds State Laws of TX Sec. 547.613
or
John Smith Tint Shop >25% VLT <25% LR Meets or Exceeds State Laws of TX Sec. 547.613
We are still waiting to hear from: TX Senate office, TX Transportation office (512.463.0067) and TX Motor Vehicle
Inspection office to get their input concerning required information on labels / stickers.

Glass & Glazing Systems 101
Being a professional window film installer, the architectural tinter should know about different types of glass and which
solar window films can be installed on them. There are the following basic types of glass used to construct windows: - Annealed
Glass
- Heat Treated Glass
- Tempered Glass
Annealed glass is the most basic and common type of window
glass. Annealed glass is heated once in the manufacturing process. When annealed glass breaks, it breaks in many
small and large shapes and irregular shapes.
Annealed glass's strength can be greatly increased by going through
another heat-treatment process. The annealed glass is re-heated near its softening point of 1200 F and cooled with water.
Heat treated glass is about twice as strong as annealed glass.
Thermally Tempered Glass (TTG) is made through a
controlled heating & cooling process. Tempered glass is 4 times stronger than annealed glass. When tempered
glass is broken; it breaks into small fragments. One example of tempered glass is the side windows of cars. All
tempered glass should have a seal in one corner of the glass that shows that it is tempered.
When deciding what
type of architectural solar film to install, check what type of glass there is and check the solar absorbance of the window film.

Commercial Buildings Save Energy with Heat Blocking Films
Commercial buildings can start reducing their energy expenses immediately by installation heat blocking window films.
Solar films block the heat before they have a chance to enter the building thus reducing the buildings HVAC load, reduce energy
consumption, keep occupants more comfortable and reduce the peak demand. Dual Reflective 5% blocks 88% of the total solar energy (88% TSER); thus substantially blocking the solar heat. The dual reflective plus
series and Silver Reflective series are great films that save money and conserve energy. Get your own energy audit by filling out the energy audit form. Solar Tint, Insulation for your Glass

Houston's Recognition as "Solar America City"
Who knew that April 2008, Houston received recognition as a "Solar America City" by the Department of Energy. This sounds interesting and exciting, but I have not heard anything new about this.
In the year since Houston received a $200,000 grant with a matching BP grant of $200,000 what has been done?
http://www.greenhoustontx.gov/
After researching a bit from the above government site, I noticed there is a 100 kilowatt pilot test program
project being installed on the convention center that cost almost 1 million dollars, all from private funds.
Solar
power combined with solar control window film is a winning combination. Solar panels will create much needed green power
while window film conserves energy so that the green power can go further. Houston has been working towards becoming
"greener" when they launched the "Green Building Resource Center" in downtown Houston.
We are
looking forward to continued development of solar power & energy conservation with commercial film, residential film, nano ceramic IR virtually transparent window films and reflective window films.

Tint Blocks The Heat From The Baking Hot Sun!
Here in Texas we are experiencing another 100'+ degree day again which is causing the a/c's to work over time.
Offices, homes and commercial buildings can't get cool enough due to the heat coming in through the windows. Commercial window film blocks the heat from the baking hot sun and keeps occupants cooler. And the payback period
can be very quick, depending on which film you chose and how high your kWh electricity costs. Here in Houston, we have
some of the highest cost of electricity in the country. Rates range from $.105 kWh to over $.195 kWh and increases every
six months if you don't monitor your bill. That's what electrical deregulation got us! The
good news about high electricity costs is that you can save even more money by installing solar control window film.
Dual Reflective 5%, Dual Reflective 15%, Silver 15%, and Silver 30% have the fastest payback periods because these films block up to 88% of the heat from passing through your
glass windows (88% TSER). A mall in Texas requested an energy audit on 7,500 square feet of glass. It was estimated that they can
conserve over 99,400 kWh of energy per year and save over $15,000 each year on their utility bill. With savings like that, window film doesn't cost money, it makes money for the building owner. Building energy audits are available from Solar Control Films. Contact Phillip Hollocher for your own personnel audit at no charge and start
saving money now! Virtually transparent films for commercial and residential use are available too to block the heat along with quick dry plus auto tints. 713.681.3000 or 877.989.FILM (3456) Insulation for your Glass!
